Job Description: Tenant Organizer

    
CASA de Maryland Synopsis:  

CASA de Maryland’s primary mission is to work with the community to improve the quality of life and fight for equal treatment and full access to resources and opportunities for low-income Latinos and their families. CASA works with other low-income immigrant communities, makes its programs and activities available to them, and joins with other organizations to advocate for social, political, and economic justice for all low-income communities.


Department Synopsis:  

Community Organizing and Political Action Department: engages low-income community members in forming committees of women, workers, and tenants. Community members elect leadership structures, and receive key advocacy training in how to speak with the press, how to speak to elected officials, and how to engage others in collective action.


Position Synopsis:  The Tenant Organizer performs a variety of tasks to organize tenants in  Maryland

Type:  Exempt (According to the Fair Labor Standards Act), Category 1
Hours:  Very flexible with extensive weekend and evening hours
Direct Supervisor:  Manager Tenant Organizer
Salary:  $31,000-40,000
    
Duties/ Responsibilities:  

Specific duties include:
• Performing door-to-door outreach in immigrant heavy low-income apartment complexes and neighborhoods.
• Inspiring community members to get involved in organizing campaigns through in-depth interviewing.
• Representing CASA when necessary before the media, foundations, and others.
• Interpreting for community members when necessary to facilitate their involvement in the campaign.
• Planning and facilitating organizational meetings, events, and training participation.
• Coordinating of tenant involvement in campaigns to improve public safety in the neighborhood.
• Organizing and participating together with tenant leaders in negotiation meetings with apartment complex owners, police, and other county officials.
• Coordination of a county-wide tenant organization.
• Performing outreach to and managing campaign participation of ally individuals and organizations including local small businesses, faith and labor institutions, civic associations, and others.
• Outreaching to and mobilizing tenant activists for county, statewide and national events relating to neighborhood public safety.
• Maintaining strategic relationships with other county partners and non-profit institutions.
• Performing database entry and writing regular reports.
• Comply with all other duties assigned by supervisor related to position.
    
Qualifications:

• Excellent writing and speaking skills
• Commitment to progressive issues
• Bilingual English/Spanish
• Minimum of two years experience in political and grassroots organizing
• Ability to maintain a database
• Computer skills highly preferred
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Highly organized and able to manage multiple ongoing projects
