New Americans Citizenship Project of Maryland (AmeriCorps)

 

Project Goal Statement: The New Americans Citizenship Project of Maryland is focused on citizenship promotion and immigrant integration work, with an emphasis on supporting eligible Legal Permanent Residents (LPRs) through the citizenship process and in receiving some of the benefits of citizenships, including better employment opportunities and higher salaries, opportunities for involvement in political, economic, and social institutions, access increased education opportunities, and ability to petition for family members by becoming U.S. citizens. The project is coordinated by CASA de Maryland as part of the Maryland New Americans Partnership.

The New Americans Citizenship Project of Maryland AmeriCorps members will provide a range of direct services to LPRs including individual service delivery (tutoring, teaching ESOL/Citizenship classes, N-400 assistance, Citizenship workshops, referrals to immigrant integration services, and coordinating volunteers). A total of 12 AmeriCorps members will be placed at the following host sites: Asian Pacific American Legal Resource Center (APALRC), CASA de Maryland, Baltimore City Community College (BCCC), Maryland Vietnamese Mutual Association (MVMA), L.I.F.E. & Discovery, Gilchrist Center for Cultural Diversity, and South Asian Americans Leading Together (SAALT). In your application, please indicate the organization you are interested in serving as an AmeriCorps member as part of the New Americans Citizenship Project of Maryland.

Benefits: $11,800 for a one year (1700 hour) full-time commitment; health care coverage, child care assistance, student loan forbearance, a $5,350 education award, and professional development training.

Duties/Responsibilities:
Direct Services:
• Coordinate workshops and intake clinics focused on naturalization, financial literacy and economic development, and access to public benefits
• Assist LPRs in filling out the citizenship application
• Teach and/or coordinate English and citizenship preparation courses
Information Gathering:
• Strengthen and develop organizational partnerships with existing community and faith-based organizations that serve immigrant communities in Maryland
• Conduct needs assessments, community education within immigrant community
Community involvement/Leadership Development/Volunteer Management:
• Develop volunteer opportunities
• Active members of communities
i. Public schools and Parent Teacher Associations
ii. Neighborhood Associations
• Cultivate immigrant and new citizen leadership
• Train and coordinate volunteers
Other duties assigned by host site.

Qualifications:
• Ability to perform all of the duties outlined above.
• U.S. Citizen or U.S. Legal Permanent Resident (recent naturalized citizens encourage to apply).
• At least 17 years old.
• A high school diploma or GED or agree to obtain one during the service year.
• Excellent English writing and language skills (bilingual in Spanish, French, Korean, Mandarin, Thai, or Hindi preferred).
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Highly organized and efficient, able to manage multiple ongoing projects, “can-do” attitude, flexibility, teamwork, and attention to detail; high degree of initiative.
• Access to personal transportation preferred.
